The Arts Insider

It takes all kinds of people to make a world. And it takes all kinds to make it artistic.

The arts are a seemingly never ending and contrasting study of people. A study of different mediums and methods. A study of different methods and styles. A study of different thoughts and ideas.

Artists, whether painters or performers, are real people. So, too, are the people who support the arts.

Look through the audience at your typical symphony concert or theatrical event- typical? I don't think so. Suits and ties? Sure, that is quite appropriate attire. But blue jeans are fitting as well. In the seats you will see matrons with blue hair, but you will also see teenagers with blue hair. All are enjoying. All are united.

The performers and artists who enrich our lives with their gifts are as varied as night and day, so put aside the typical stereotypes. We have all heard that only wealthy or highly educated people support the arts. Art is for all of us, and as diverse and individual as we are so, too, is the array of beauty and entertainment that is art.

If not for this diversity, what would be the point? Imagine a world where there is only one color or one sound or one shape. Thankfully, we live in a world full of different and fascinating things to enrich our lives and inspire us.

I like differences. It keeps things from being boring. I love symphonic music, but I also enjoy punk rock. I love ballet, but I also enjoy clogging. I love Broadway musicals, but I also enjoy Shakespeare and Sam Shepherd. I love sculpture and painting, but I also enjoy tattoos. All are art. All are different.

Art is all around us. You can find it in nature or in architecture or even in the melodic sounds made by the beeping of horns in traffic. Okay, maybe that is stretching it a bit, but you get the idea. So open your eyes. Open your ears. Open your mind and see the diversity that is art. Enjoy!
